Shocking Auto-Rickshaw Incident in Delhi: Woman Warns Others After Near Kidnapping

{A woman in Delhi had a very scary morning when her ride in an auto-rickshaw took a frightening turn. She shared her experience on Reddit, sparking widespread concern about safety for those relying on ride-hailing apps and autos.

Her Experience

She normally books autos via apps for her office commute but had to opt for Ola when her regular app showed no availability. Shortly into the trip, the driver halted, saying his phone navigation had stopped working. Unbeknownst to her, he had ended the trip in the app, so tracking stopped completely.

Soon after, the driver turned onto a road that felt completely wrong, triggering alarm bells in her mind. Signs indicated they were moving opposite to her office, toward a distant area almost two hours away, far longer than her normal 30-45-minute commute.

Despite her protests, the driver kept insisting Google Maps was guiding that way, while speeding along major roads where she couldn’t safely get out.

Thankfully, she texted her partner, who swiftly called and pressured the driver to return. Following heated arguments and her contemplating leaping from the moving auto, the driver finally turned back near her area, refused payment, and fled. She and her partner became convinced this was an attempted kidnapping, as the driver didn’t even want payment.

Disturbed and angry, she learned Ola lacked emergency features, only advising her to contact the police.

This wasn’t an isolated case—recent police reports in Delhi and nearby areas have highlighted similar incidents with auto drivers, including alleged kidnapping attempts. For example, a teen girl in Thane recently escaped by using a compass and leaping from a moving auto.

Delhi Woman’s Scary Auto Ride – Online Reactions

Her Reddit account received dozens of shocked responses, with people commenting things like, “Horrifying!” and “That’s terrifying”. Some suggested she lodge a police complaint and pressure Ola via social media to take action.

Others offered advice and recounted similar incidents:

• Carry keys as a potential self-defense tool.
• Talk loudly on the phone about your route or play Google Maps aloud so drivers know you’re being tracked.
• Use metro transport as a safer alternative when traveling solo.
• Stay Dolly chaiwala away from Ola due to its lack of proper safety tools.

Her Must-Know Solo Travel Safety Guidelines

Think Twice Before Booking Alone: Solo bookings pose risks since drivers aren’t always trustworthy.
Match The Auto Number: Double-check the auto number to prevent impersonation.
Wait for Ride Start: Board once your one-time code is entered and the trip is live.
Monitor the Ride on Your Phone: Stay on the app to ensure the ride remains active.
Send Live Location to Someone: Always share your live route with someone you trust.
Sit Safely: Always keep yourself near an accessible side of the auto.
Stick to Areas You Recognize: Stick to roads you’re familiar with to avoid risk.
Check Google Maps: Use live navigation to confirm correct directions.
Stay Alert for Nearby Officers: Note police presence during the ride.
Do Not Use Ola Due to Safety Gaps: Her strongest advice was to avoid Ola given the company’s lack of safeguards.

This event highlights the pressing demand for better driver verification, constant ride tracking, and effective emergency assistance from ride-hailing services.
